vRA DNS requests flood

 Knowledge Transfer: 

Today, I finally figured out why my vRA system was killing my PiHole. vRA wanted to lookup itself in IPv6 form. I do not run IPv6 in my home and have it disabled in the home network. I needed to disable the IPv6 system in vRA. So, I did the following on vRA 8.6: 

sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1

then ran a reboot. 

While I was also in in the system, I added DNS records to the "hosts" file just to help the system. I hope this helps others like me who don't have IPv6 running in the homelab.

After hours of struggling to install ESXi on a USB drive I figured 2 things out: My hardware can only boot from USB with the “formatwithmbr” flag set during install Newer ESXi can only seem to see filesystems formatted with FAT32 meaning 8GB or greater. Anyway, it’s not hard to do either, but it is a pain. During the very first screen you should press <Shift> + <O> to get the options line to show. Getting Rancher LongHorn to work with RancherOS on vSphere

I was looking for an easy solution to getting a testing environment ready to explore Kubernetes (K8s).  I wnet through several itierations and testing to see what would be the best fit. I found Rancher to be a great solution for me. I run a small lab host at home and Rancher allowed me to deploy a K8s cluster quickly with many bells and whistles that I need to see the potential of K8s without getting lost in the process.  Rancher 2.4 is what I am running. I am running it as a docker container. I am deploying RancherOS nodes in my home lab using the vSphere plugin within Rancher.  One of the big hang ups in other K8s quick starts is shared storage. VMware Integrated Containers (VIC) vs Boot2Docker

I was able to download a copy of the recent vIC bits and I have to say that I am not impressed. I can see where some of it makes sense, but I don’t understand the logic for creating a whole lot of VMs running 1 container. I can see maybe consolidating all containers in one “App” running in one VM (Apache, MySQL, other app), but I don’t see what running one container per VM really does to boost containers on vSphere. I am going to guess that it is a way for VMware to still stay in the game per say. Update: VMware answered this question stating that it was to help drive segregated workloads and to help with monitoring as the container would be the only workload on the VM.
